HISTORY

of the National Stud Farm

The former national stud farm of Strasbourg, which was built in the 18th century, is an outstanding piece of architecture, the front of the building, the roof, the monumental gate, as well as the main stable, are all classified as historical monuments.

The building became the headquarters of the city’s horse riding academy in 1752, and in 1756 it became the home of the Royal Stud Farm under the authority of Marquis d’Argenson, who was head of the kingdom’s stud farms. The school disappeared at the French Revolution. Only under Napoleon I did the school make a come back in 1823. The riding school came back to life once again between 1830 and 1845. However, it closed again later on, and for good this time.

From Ircad to Les Haras

Perpetuating excellence

The Haras were renovated by IRCAD and perpetuate the sense of excellence of this world-famous institute.

IRCAD trains over 5,500 surgeons from 116 countries every year and has become the world's number one minimally invasive surgery training center. Several mirror IRCAD institutes were created around the world : IRCAD Taiwan in 2008, followed by two IRCAD centers in Brazil (in Sao Paulo in 2011 and Rio de Janeiro in 2017).

In order to maintain its world leader status, the institute has chosen to renovate this magical place, classified as a historical monument :
> To increase its attractiveness
> To pursue its development
> To make the most of a new economic concept, as most of the profit made will go to the Institute.
> To create employment incentives

IRCAD has decided to implement a Biocluster with the support of local authorities : a business incubator which aims to encourage technology transfer in the field of medicine and surgery.

As a non-profit and general interest organization, IRCAD is proud to have taken part in the renovation works, and to have put forward this gem of Strasbourg's historical heritage. Les Haras, which used to be inaccessible, are now open to the public.
